As we’ve grown and evolved, we recognized the need for a name that reflects our future-focused vision and our commitment to cutting-edge eye care. Samanta Eye Care has long been a pillar of excellence in Midnapore, known for its compassionate care and advanced eye treatments. But as we navigated through the changing tides of healthcare, we realized that our name needed to evolve to better reflect our journey.
But as this world evolved and the needs of our patients grew, we knew it was time to reflect this transformation. We asked ourselves: How can we better represent our forward-thinking approach and the bright future of eye care? The answer came in a name that mirrors our vision for tomorrow. Thus, we are proud to introduce Dristilok Eye Hospital- “ Dristilok” meaning “Vision” in Bengali- captures our essence of seeing beyond the ordinary. It symbolizes our dedication to innovative treatments,cutting-edge technology, and an enhanced patient experience..
“Dristi” is a Sanskrit word that means “vision,” “sight,” or “gaze.” “Lok” means “world,” “people,” or “society.” So, “Dristi Lok” can be interpreted as:
“Vision for the World”
“Sight for the People”
Together, “Dristi Lok” suggests a name or title that conveys a sense of perspective, insight, or awareness that encompasses a broader community or world.
At Dristilok Eye Hospital, we continue to offer a wide range of services, including cataract treatment, glaucoma management, and pediatric ophthalmology, all backed by the latest technology and compassionate approach. Founder's Desk
Dr. Apurba Samanta, the visionary behind Dristilok Eye Hospital, began his journey in the remote village of Hemantapur, Paschim Medinipur. Raised as a man who never worked with the result in mind, he put all his efforts into doing the best at whatever he could.
He completed his MBBS from North Bengal Medical College and went on to earn his MS in Ophthalmology from the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology (RIO), Kolkata in 2002. Since then, Dr. Samanta has built an inspiring career spanning over 23 years, performing more than 1.5 lakh cataract surgeries, phacoemulsifications, and other anterior segment procedures.
His first venture, Samanta Eye Care, was a reflection of his unwavering dedication, clinical excellence, and grounded humility. With the same core values, he established Dristilok Eye Hospital — a modern, forward-thinking eye care centre dedicated to restoring sight and enhancing lives.
Dristilok stands as a testament to Dr. Samanta’s belief that clear vision is the cornerstone of a vibrant life. Under his leadership, the hospital continues to offer state-of-the-art technology, advanced treatments, and a team of expert professionals, all committed to providing compassionate and world-class eye care.
Dr. Apurba Samanta’s story is not just one of medical milestones, but of purpose, perseverance, and the power of vision — both literal and visionary.

GLAUCOMA SERVICE
Glaucoma Hospital in Kolkata: Amulyajyoti Eye Foundation
Glaucoma, a silent yet insidious eye condition, is a leading cause of irreversible vision loss. If left untreated, it can gradually damage the optic nerve, leading to significant visual impairment. This is where Amulyajyoti Eye Foundation, a premier glaucoma hospital in Kolkata, steps in.
What Causes Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a serious eye condition that can lead to irreversible vision loss if not diagnosed and treated early. But what exactly causes glaucoma? Understanding the factors that contribute to this condition is crucial in preventing its progression. At Amulyajyoti Eye Foundation, a leading Retina hospital in Kolkata, we specialize in diagnosing and treating glaucoma, offering advanced care to preserve your vision.
Increased Intraocular Pressure (IOP):
The primary cause of glaucoma is increased pressure within the eye, known as intraocular pressure (IOP). This pressure builds up when the eye's aqueous humor (a fluid that nourishes the eye) is not draining properly, leading to damage to the optic nerve.
Poor Drainage of Aqueous Humor:
The eye continuously produces aqueous humor, which must drain out through a mesh-like channel. When these channels become blocked or malfunction, the fluid cannot drain efficiently, increasing eye pressure.
Genetic Factors:
Genetics play a significant role in the development of glaucoma. If you have a family history of glaucoma, you are at a higher risk of developing the condition. Regular eye check-ups at a specialized glaucoma hospital in Kolkata like Amulyajyoti Eye Foundation are essential for early detection.
Age:
The risk of developing glaucoma increases with age. People over 60 are more susceptible to glaucoma, making regular eye examinations crucial for early detection and treatment.
Medical Conditions:
Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease, can increase the risk of developing glaucoma. These conditions can affect blood flow and pressure regulation in the eyes.
Eye Injuries:
Previous eye injuries or trauma can lead to secondary glaucoma. Such injuries may disrupt the eye’s internal structures, causing fluid drainage problems and increased IOP.
Prolonged Use of Corticosteroids:
Long-term use of corticosteroid medications can increase the risk of glaucoma. These medications can cause fluid buildup in the eye, raising intraocular pressure.
Thin Corneas:
Studies have shown that individuals with thin corneas are at a higher risk of developing glaucoma. The cornea’s thickness can affect the accuracy of IOP measurements, potentially leading to undetected elevated pressure.
TYPES OF GLAUCOMA:-
Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that can lead to damage of the optic nerve, crucial for good vision. This damage is often due to abnormally high pressure in the eye. As a leading Retina hospital in Kolkata, Amulyajyoti Eye Foundation specializes in diagnosing and treating various types of glaucoma. Understanding the different types of glaucoma can help in early detection and management, which is vital to preserving vision.
Open-Angle Glaucoma:
-
The most common form of glaucoma.
-
Occurs gradually as the eye’s drainage canals become clogged over time.
-
Often asymptomatic until significant vision loss occurs.
-
Regular eye check-ups at Amulyajyoti Eye Foundation can help in early detection and management.
Angle-Closure Glaucoma:
-
Less common but a medical emergency.
-
Happens when the iris is very close to the drainage angle in the eye, blocking fluid from draining properly.
-
Symptoms include severe eye pain, nausea, and sudden visual disturbances.
-
Immediate treatment at our glaucoma hospital in Kolkata can prevent severe vision loss.
Normal-Tension Glaucoma:
-
Occurs even with normal eye pressure.
-
The optic nerve gets damaged despite normal intraocular pressure.
-
Risk factors include a family history of glaucoma, cardiovascular disease, and certain ethnic backgrounds.
-
Our specialists at Amulyajyoti Eye Foundation use advanced diagnostic tools to detect and manage this condition.
Congenital Glaucoma:
-
Present at birth due to improper development of the eye’s drainage system.
-
Symptoms include enlarged eyes, cloudiness, and excessive tearing.
-
Early intervention is critical, and our pediatric ophthalmologists at Amulyajyoti Eye Foundation are experienced in treating this rare condition.
Secondary Glaucoma:
-
Develops as a complication of other medical conditions like diabetes, eye injuries, or the use of certain medications.
-
Treating the underlying cause is crucial to managing secondary glaucoma.
-
At our glaucoma hospital in Kolkata, we provide comprehensive care to address both the primary condition and the secondary glaucoma.
Glaucoma vs. Cataract: Understanding the Difference
Glaucoma and cataracts are both common eye conditions that can significantly impact vision. While they share some similarities, they are distinct diseases with different causes, symptoms, and treatment approaches.
What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is often referred to as the "silent thief of sight" because it often progresses without noticeable symptoms. It occurs when the pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure) builds up, damaging the optic nerve. If left untreated, glaucoma can lead to irreversible vision loss. Amulyajyoti Eye Foundation, a leading glaucoma hospital in Kolkata, offers advanced diagnosis and treatment options for glaucoma. Our experienced ophthalmologists utilize state-of-the-art technology to detect glaucoma early and prevent further vision damage.
What is a Cataract?
A cataract is a clouding of the eye's lens, which can cause blurry or cloudy vision. It develops gradually as we age, but other factors like smoking, diabetes, and excessive UV exposure can accelerate its formation. Unlike glaucoma, cataracts can usually be corrected through surgery.

Glaucoma Symptoms: Early Detection is Key
Glaucoma, often referred to as the "silent thief of sight," can progress without noticeable symptoms in its early stages. This insidious eye condition gradually damages the optic nerve, ultimately leading to irreversible vision loss. While it's crucial to undergo regular eye exams, being aware of potential symptoms can help in early detection.
Common Glaucoma Symptoms:-
Although glaucoma might not present obvious signs initially, certain symptoms can indicate a potential issue. These may include:
-
Blurred vision: This can be a gradual or sudden onset, depending on the type of glaucoma.
-
Loss of peripheral vision: This is a common symptom of advanced glaucoma, where you start to lose your side vision.
-
Halos around lights: Seeing rainbow-colored rings around lights, especially at night, could be a sign of glaucoma.
-
Eye pain: Severe eye pain, often accompanied by headaches, nausea, and vomiting, is indicative of acute glaucoma, a medical emergency.
If you experience any of these symptoms, it's essential to consult an ophthalmologist immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for preserving your vision.

-
Ophthalmoscopy: Your doctor examines the optic nerve for signs of damage, a common indicator of glaucoma.
-
Perimetry: This test checks your peripheral vision to detect any visual field loss associated with glaucoma.
-
Gonioscopy: This procedure examines the angle where the iris meets the cornea to determine if it is open or closed. This helps in identifying the type of glaucoma you may have.
-
Pachymetry: This measures the thickness of your cornea, which can affect the accuracy of pressure readings.
-
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT): This advanced imaging test provides detailed images of the optic nerve.

CORNEA CLINIC
The cornea is the transparent front part of the eye that covers the iris, pupil, and anterior chamber. The cornea, with the anterior chamber and lens, refracts light, with the cornea accounting for approximately two-thirds of the eye's total optical power. In humans, the refractive power of the cornea is approximately 43 dioptres. While the cornea contributes most of the eye's focusing power, its focus is fixed. The curvature of the lens, on the other hand, can be adjusted to "tune" the focus depending upon the object's distance.

CONTACT LENS
Contact lenses are always in direct contact with our eyes. Why put our delicate eyes at risk by using contact lenses, Contact lenses provide you with good vision and they also have an aesthetic appeal. But one needs to maintain them in a proper way to make optimum use of the contact lenses. They need to be regularly cleaned and cleansed of any dirt that may have accumulated. By regularly cleaning contact lenses, we save our eyes from various diseases and ailments. Cleaning contact lenses with water is not a good idea.

SQUINT & OCULOPLASTY
The adjustment of the muscles of the eye to correctly align the eyes is the most common eye operation performed in children. Eyes can be straightened virtually at any age- from as early as 4-5 months and whenever necessary in adulthood. A squint operation may take from 15-40 minutes. The procedure is relatively straightforward and the results are good and nearly perfect. In most patients there is an 80-90% chance of the eyes being correctly aligned postoperatively. This is also a day care procedure and can be done under general anaesthesia if required.
All types of Oculoplastic Surgeries like Ptosis, Entropion, Ectropion, eye lid tumours are undertaken here with excellent results.
